Steve Miller and his band always manage to put together a pretty solid CD and in all formats since the mid 1970s. This early 90s CD is no different, and in fact Miller has managed to maintain his bluesy guitar riffs and vocals so wonderfully that if you didn''t know the date of Wide River you could easily think it had come out a decade or so earlier.

Great album but too quiet of a mastering...
Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2016
Although I love the songs on this album it just was not mastered "loud" enough. It plays quiet compared to my other LP''s in general. The packaging was beautiful though and the vinyl very clean, flat and quiet. Just not a loud enough master for my liking.

And the Space Cowboy strikes back. OK, this record is 20 years old, but it is a milestone in good American music. You can hear the heritage of Les Paul on it. The sound and the voice of the master himself is incredibly excellent.

The June 1993 original release of Wide river; sees Steve Miller playing some amazing guitar ''licks'' in his usual rocking, blues style, proof he hadn''t lost his reputation as a guitar great. The album starts off well enough with the title track and is followed by the next two tracks: Midnight train and Blue eyes - and although pretty ok - are nothing too much to shout about.mediocre I''d say. Things improve somewhat with the melodic ballad - Lost in your eyes. Track six: Horse and rider is an outstanding song.with its military snare drum style intro and outro (courtesy of Gordy Knudtson) and heartfelt lyrics - ''I''m a hero coming to win your love'' (not exact lyrics by the way) profound message - is one of the best tracks on the album. Track eight: Conversation - has an unusual and quirky sound intro - heard throughout - trying to imitate a telephone connection? And is quite experimental. Cry cry cry - up next - moving on - next up: Stranger blues - is a blues purists delight.an Elmore James (blues legend) song,it sees Steve Miller play bottle neck style guitar imitating - and even emulating Elmore James'' trademark guitar playing - superb stuff! Walks like a lady - is probably the most commercial sounding track on Wide river - But includes high-ended honky tonk style piano playing by Joey Heinmann - a bit reminiscent of 1950''s piano starlet - Winifred Atwell. Digression over: back to SMB offerings - final track: All your loving - is another homage to a blues legend - in this case it''s writer - Otis Rush - and is so reminiscent of (early) Fleetwood Mac blues style of ''Peter Green'' era of said band.although this version includes superb saxophone playing by Bob Malach - an excellent closing track. This is the 2018 re-issue,re-mastered version - latter courtesy of Ken Hertz - who does a sterling job on the sound quality. The original production - credited to Steve Miller - is also excellent and been suitably enhanced by latter day technology. Also included in package is: two-sided inner sleeve with full track listing, song writing credits, afforementioned musicians'' credits of this line-up of the SMB.also photo of SM and the stunning album cover of that swimming horse..A clue to a track or two that lies within - no lyrics though. To conclude: this is a very good album from the Steve Miller Band - and i am pleased with my purchase - but wouldn''t say it''s a classic - enjoy all the same. N.B. one or two cross references to previous songs in lyrics I.e. Gangster of love and Popatis? of love contained within - giving excellent continuity!
