My goodness, I love this book!!!! My daughter passed away in 2016, she was adopted, the youngest of our four children by 13 years, the only girl, and our only brown skinned child. She was ADORED!!! We loved Sya with all of ourselves, and she loved us back just as complete. What a joy she was! She was born with a heart defect but was placed in our care as a perfectly healthy newborn. We soon realized how sick she was and she had heart transplant at 20 months old. At 6 1/2 she suffered a severe rejection and passed away at 7 years old, unexpectedly. I don''t know how I came across this book, but it was the illustrations that caught my eye. I never found many books with brown skinned little girls to read to her...so I looked at this one....I loved the sample text I read and as I read it...I knew I was going to buy it for my youngest niece and nephew...Sya''s cousins and best friends. Also adopted....they would not be a part of my brothers family had it not been that Sya was a part of ours. God willing, One day they will grow up and perhaps they will, have questions regarding their adoption, perhaps my girl would have too. I would have read this book to her again and again if she were still here. When I read the part about the dancing....and heaven declaring "you were made in Gods image" I cried. My girl loved to dance and we played a video at her funeral of her dancing and dancing dancing, alone...and She was so full of joy in it. I imagine God was smiling as He watched her, as He smiles at her now that she is home with him.
I was planning on giving this book to my niece and nephew for Christmas but as soon as it came and I read it, I took it to them. I love it! I plan on buying more to give as gifts to her classmates!!!

The illustrations in the book were done well and the rhyming flowed nicely. The content of the book was most concerning and had a lot of red flags. I do believe its the authors responsibility to look into this and be accountable. The girl leaves her home on a bike to go meet a strange man in the park (not her family member or caretaker). Another area of major concern was the symbols being drawn. Although swirls are an innocent thing a child may draw, pedophiles have hijacked this symbol to acknowledge one another. American children are at high risk and this needs to be taken seriously, I employ you to do your own research on this. You can start by referring to Blake Lively''s organization called the child rescue coalition.

It''s ok. I didn''t care much for the illustrations. Why couldn''t the book just include the little girl and her sister in the pictures. Or even her family would have been fine. Who is this random weird looking confused white male ADULT stranger she befriends and seems to go on adventures with. Why not illustrate her meeting a new friend her own age? I like the words, however. Even though some parts are a little advanced for my 5 yr old, I like the.message.

As a pastor and a father of a young daughter, I deeply care about the books she “reads” (she’s only 2½) and has read to her, especially the books that speak of God. I want my daughter to have an understanding of God that reflects the beauty, love, wonder, passion, and creativity we see of God in scripture. I also want her to see herself and her neighbor in compassionate and grace filled ways, as seen in how Jesus loved and called us to love.

So it matters to me what books will fill her bookshelves and be found on her nightstand. If I’m being honest I approach most Christian children’s books with an expectation that they are going to be just awful. The thing that bothers me the most about many of the Christian children’s books I have seen is the poor theology they contain and the dumbing down of the message of the Bible.

When I received this book, When God Made You to review, the gloves were off. I was ready to mercilessly pick it apart and tell you why you should never read it to your children. But instead, after reading it I couldn’t wait to read this with my daughter and I hope it becomes one of her all time favorites!

When God Made You is written by Matthew Paul Turner who has written numerous books, including: Hear No Evil, Churched, and The Coffeehouse Gospel and is illustrated by David Catrow who has illustrated more than 70 children’s books.

This book is beautiful in every way. The writing is poetic, the theology is rich, and the illustrations are absolutely gorgeous. Visually this book is stunning and unlike any other children’s book I have seen. My daughter couldn’t take her eyes off the pages as we read the story together.

The main theme of the book is celebrating and holding onto the fact that we are all uniquely created by God and we are to live and create and love in the fulness of our God ordained uniqueness. Turner writes in a way that inspires. Not only does my daughter love the story but as an adult I was taken aback by the depth of the writing. This is a book that young ones will enjoy and even as my daughter gets older I want to continue to unpack more of the beauty found in these pages.

I so badly want to quote the entire book for you, but since that breaks way too many copyright laws, here are a few of my favorite lines:

‘Cause when God made you, this much is true, the world got to meet who God already knew.

Discover. Explore! Have faith but love more.

‘Cause when God made you and the world oohed and aahed, in heaven they called you an image of God.

A you who views others as sisters and brothers and lives by three words: love one another.

Buy this book for your son or daughter, your niece or nephew, your grandson or granddaughter, your neighbors kids, or your friends who just had a baby. When God Made You is a rare find in Christian children’s literature. It’s a perfect combination of excellent writing, really sound theology, and unbelievable artwork.

* Publisher recommended age range for this book is 3-10 years old.

My 3yr old daughter liked it. I let her choose the book each night and she chose this several nights in a row. Couple things I didnt like was the little girl seemingly left the house on her own without her guardians. But I told my duaghter that it was just her fantasy as she created that story to tell her little sister. That might have been the authors intention too I just wished it was stated. Also was uncomfortable with her approaching a strange man in the park alone. So I cautioned my daughter throughout. Overall cute story.

I had read this book quickly in a brick and mortar store and loved the words. It actually made me tear up the first time that I read it! The illustrations are beautiful. Then someone mentioned to me the fact that this sweet little girl leaves her house on her own, starts drawing in the park with an adult male, and then ends up in the illustrations clutching his shirt while riding on the back of a bird. One might argue that she was trying to cheer up a sad person or that the ride on the back of the bird is in her imagination, but really, both of those arguments still send up red flags for me. After seeing it from the Stranger Danger perspective, the book was tainted for me and I couldn''t bring myself to read it to my son, even though I adore the words, the message, and the skin tones represented here. I had to return it. I would definitely buy the book if the main character was painting and flying with her little sister or a kid her own age.

I bought this book because my four-year-old daughter has been struggling with her identity. Visually, she is a minority in our community, and despite our enthusiastic and research-driven efforts to support her healthy self-development and racial identity, she still cries sometimes wishing that she looked like her friends, was "less fast" at running like the other girls in her class, etc. This breaks my heart, and I''m constantly on the hunt for resources to show her that she is intentionally and purposefully designed and that God loves her so much. When the book arrived, my daughter immediately loved it and demanded that I read it several times in a row.

That weekend, we took a trip, and the book got misplaced. Two weeks later, I found it and pulled it out to show her. "MOM!" she said. "Read ''You Are Special'' to me!" That''s not the name of the book, but I am so pleased that this is the message she remembered!

My daughters look very similar to the lead character and her little sister, and both enjoyed seeing themselves in this book. It would be a wonderful addition to any child''s library, but in particular, it could be a wonderful gift for black/African-American children, as they are underrepresented in most children''s literature and it''s always exciting for my children to actually see someone that looks like them in books.

My one "complaint" is that the pictures don''t lend themselves as well to the story--several times, my daughter asked me "what is that guy doing?" and I *guess* that He is the artist''s portrayal of God, but I''m not 100% sure, so I wasn''t exactly sure what to tell her ("painting?" "Riding on a bird?") I wish there was a little note to parents inside telling them what story the artist intended to tell with the visuals of the story...or perhaps this could be available elsewhere as a resource (a video interview with the artist)? Still, it''s a wonderful book that I highly recommend.

Beautiful written and a fantastic way to start cultivating a love of the Lord in your child. It is also so wonderful to see a child of colour as the main illustrated character of the book. Regardless of race, this delightful and heartwarming book speaks to every child (in fact it speaks to every adult too!) but I feel so encouraged seeing diversity and representation in books of this kind. It is so important. There are not enough books like these out there and it simply makes my heart sing to see this. I feel so happy when I read this loving, joyful, Godly book to my mixed race son who sees someone who looks like him and mummy on the page. I am buying a bunch of these as gifts to give friends (both of colour and white) to expose their children to the LOVE of God and to diversity. God loves us ALL. We need to see that as children so that is sows the seeds of love and acceptance in us, for all races, from an early age.
