Review

"Highly recommended for public libraries and textile collections in academic institutions. If you can buy only one book on handweaving this year, this is the one."  —Library Journal, starred review

This is the one book I recommend every weaver have in their library. My copy never collects dust; as it is the book I pull out every time I start a new project. I purchased this book when I had a 4 shaft loom and still use it with my 8 shaft loom.

I love that it has color photographs of every draft including both the front and back of the fabric. When I was learning to weave it was helpful that the book starts with easy patterns first and works up to more complicated patterns. There are basic weaving instructions which includes how to do special hem techniques, twisting fringe and wet finishing.

The binding of the book is a coil to allow the pages to sit flat while working with it. The phrase "Must Have" sums up this book perfectly.

I got this book when I received my new 8 shaft loom because initially I am only using the first 4 shafts and am looking for patterns for 4 shafts. It came highly suggested by many weavers. It is an awesome book. It starts out with all the weaving basics the goes from beginning 4 shaft patterns and works progressively to harder patterns as the book goes on. Its nicely written with pictures and written instructions. Print is easy to read. Mine was a hard cover but not overly large and easy to carry around or back and forth to a class if needed. I feel its a must have for all new weavers of 4 shaft or higher looms.

Also, I ordered a new copy, but got a used one. It is in very good condition, and I won''t be returning it, but there is writing on a couple of pages.

If you have your loom threaded in one pattern, this book shows you how many different patterns can be used with that one threading, very handy for us new weavers. The fact that it is in color can be a good/bad thing. It''s good by showing you the pattern more vividly, but for people like me you can''t really see any other color then the ones shown, it can make it challenging.

Absolutely wonderfully overwhelming with the sheer number of drafts even including color ideas I can''t see ever being bored with this book. Contains Indespensable information at the beginning. Its a must have for any weaver. I purchased the hardcover, listed at around $8-10 lower priced than the spiral bound, a little sad because I know the benefits of spiral binding of an informative teaching or pattern book, when I arrived I was over the moon!! The hardcover IS spiral bound. Oh happy day.

I bought this book for my 87 yr old mum who has a loom -weaves tapestries, blankets, throws etc. She has a significant amount of experience with weaving - she described this book as a very significant contribution to her collection. She mentioned that is had new information, new techniques, patterns and ideas that provided a lot of new project ideas for her to pursue as she works away on the loom through the winter months.

I''m just getting started as a weaver, and having just completed a class and learned a bit about twills, I wanted to find a directory of patterns to help me move forward. Wow! This book is basically cover-to-cover inspiration. The challenge is to choose just ONE project to start with - the illustrations are so gorgeous that one wants to dive in and tackle them all.

The book is set up so that it will be useful to a beginner like me - and still provide tips and inspiration for an advanced weaver. The illustrations are excellent; I suspect that they are scans rather than photographs, as they are consistently sharp and crisp, with no distortions or issues with light and shadow. Both the front and back of a weave or shown - and often, instructions are also provided to create the "reverse" of a weave (e.g., 3/1 twill vs. 1/3 twill).

The instructions are clear provided that you actually READ the introduction. If you are a beginner and just try to figure out the drafts, you''ll get lost. It''s also important to note that this author threads heddles from right to left ("Z") rather than left to right ("S"), so you''ll need to adapt if (like me) you learned the opposite direction.

I didn''t want to take on the expense of getting an 8-shaft (or higher) loom at this point in my "hobby" - so it was wonderful to discover just how much could be done on a four-shaft loom. I''m delighted to have found this early on, instead of wasting time and money on less useful guides. I suspect this book will be on my shelf for many, many years.

I recently became interested in weaving and devoured about a dozen weaving books, including the Chandler''s "Learning to weave". This book is my in the top two, on the way of becoming #1. The Chandler book was excellent when I was a total novice, explaining the basic techniques. Now this is the book I am referencing most.

This book is written for a four-harness loom. It is well organized, contains not only patterns, but tips and ideas. The explanations are very clear, accompanied by very clear illustrations. The images and illustrations are done in color and the text is written in a font that that is easy to read.

The images of the patterns show the entire projects along with several close-ups and the stitch patterns. I am attaching an image of a random page from the book for demonstration. Note that book has a spiral binding, so it lays flat and is easy to use as a reference.

This book has become my favorite go to reference. I highly recommend it.

Great selection of patterns, well laid out in a very well designed and bound book. Don''t expect it to tell you how to weave, or set up a loom, it''s just what it says, a pattern book.
