Product Description

An all-star cast sparks this captivating comedy about a group of old friends whose 10-year high school reunion creates some hilariously unexpected surprises. Willie (Timothy Hutton -- FRENCH KISS), Tommy (Matt Dillon -- TO DIE FOR), and Paul (Michael Rapaport -- MIGHTY APHRODITE) may have lost a bit of their youth, but they''re still ready to party with Uma Thurman (PULP FICTION), Rosie O''Donnell (TV''s THE ROSIE O''DONNELL SHOW), Lauren Holly (DUMB AND DUMBER), and Mira Sorvino (AT FIRST SIGHT) -- the "beautiful girls" who''ve turned their lives upside down! Also featuring a hot soundtrack, BEAUTIFUL GIRLS is a must-see comic delight that''s sure to entertain you!

Amazon.com

This town drama from Ted Demme centers on former classmates coming together for their 10-year reunion. Scott Rosenberg''s ( Things to Do in Denver When You''re Dead) script thoughtfully passes over the usual grumblings of young adults who can''t believe they still live in the same snowbound town. They accept--even welcome--their blue-collar jobs, whether plowing snow or cutting hair. Willie (Timothy Hutton), the lone wanderer, returns to his listless house in a state of flux, the piano-bar circuit wearing thin as is his relationship with Tracy, a well-off attorney (Annabeth Gish). He isn''t the only one with problems. Tommy (Matt Dillon) occasionally sleeps with his now-married high school sweetheart Darian (Lauren Holly) while the earnest Sharon (Mira Sorvino) is left to wait. Paul (another thickheaded role for Michael Rapaport) refuses to commit to Jan (Martha Plimpton) until it''s too late. Paul is enamored with the idea of the supermodel (the title''s "beautiful girls") that, he believes, can make life perfect. It''s a very satisfying comedy, with some forced poignancy (Willie''s description of Tracy as a "seven and a half" comes off as a death sentence). Rosie O''Donnell''s dissertation on why Playboy and Penthouse have ruined males'' expectations is much like Meg Ryan''s orgasm scene in When Harry Met Sally...: it''s hilarious, even memorable, never wholly believable.

The two wild cards thrown into Beautiful Girls give the film its kick. Uma Thurman enters as the local barkeep''s (Pruitt Taylor Vince) radiant cousin. From the big city, she can flirt with the awestruck guys and still keep her head. Willie''s real emotional tug is from Marty, the precocious 13-year-old neighbor. If you didn''t see Natalie Portman''s sophisticated work in the The Professional, her performance here will come as a revelation. You deeply believe that Willie and Marty are connected despite their age difference. Their courtship will never come to be, but the way the two talk (and talk some more) about their lives is the most insightful part of Rosenberg''s script. Everyone''s so comfortable in his or her roles that you may truly feel sad when the film ends. --Doug Thomas

This is such a spot-on look at a group of young men realizing that ten years after high school, it''s time to grow up. It also shows how their women friends deal with their men''s attempts to move on to adult relationships. The characters are real people that you can identify with from your own high school days, from bullies to jocks to the class "snake" (what a great switch from other terms!). Rosie O''Donnell doesn''t have much screen time, but when she''s on, it''s worth every minute. Pure plain spoken, in-your-face tell it like it is. Timothy Hutton is wonderful as a young man on the fence trying to decide which way to fall. Loved this movie!!

I went back and revisited this movie, after not having seen it for years, and it was just as good as I remember. What an unbeatable ensemble cast: Timothy Hutton (who still holds the record for youngest male Oscar winner, winning when he was only 19 for "Ordinary People"), Oscar-winner Mira Sorvino (Supporting Actress, "Mighty Aphrodite"), future Oscar-winner Natalie Portman ("Black Swan"), Matt Dillon, Rosie O''Donnell, Martha Plimpton ("Running on Empty", TV''s "Raising Hope"), Uma Thurman ("Pulp Fiction," "Kill Bill," Parts 1 and 2), David Arquette, Michael Rapaport ("True Romance"), Lauren Holly ("Dumb and Dumber"), Noah Emmerich (who has every-man appeal and seems like someone you know), Max Perlich, Anne Bobby, and Annabeth Gish ("Mystic Pizza"). Male-female-relationship drama left and right, but with just the right touches of warmth and humor (despite some abrasive language and inappropriate adult themes), and the short-but-sweet scenes between "Willie" (Hutton) and 13-year-old next-door neighbor "Marty" (Portman), completely innocent, together create an on-screen relationship that''s the movie''s most genuine, endearing, and memorable.

Especially part of pedophilic cravings (for the lack of the better word) of one the main male characters that obviously over 30 year old towards Natalie''s Portman character who is 13. That''s not normal and that''s not how world works and I doubt that type of behavior was considered normal in 90''s as well.

There is some great talent in this film rather confusingly named Beautiful Girls. Natalie Portman as a 13-year-old who is witty, smart and sexy with a wonderful ageless maturity and early Uma Thurman, beautiful and killingly decisive with her charming matter-of-factness are but two of the beautiful girls. Tim Hutton and Matt Dillon, about to turn thirty, and about to go to a high school reunion while experiencing a lack of decisiveness about the direction of their lives and the women they are involved with. Terrific cast, some moments of great dialogue.

Enjoyable "coming of age" flick -- actually sort of coming of middle age, with the exception of a pubescent Natalie Portman, who nearly steals the show in her delightful performance as impossibly wise, perceptive and cute Marty. Timothy Hutton is also fun to watch as Willie, an apprehensive Peter Pan under Marty''s spell. It''s all innocent, by the way, enough so that Will''s raunchy and loser buddies, all professional snow plowman in Minnesota''s eternal winter, even crack jokes about his pedophilia in the midst of their own romantic angst and struggles against maturity. Rosie O''Donnell is also great at just being Rosie, although she''d never pass as a Minn. native with her Bronx accent.

I loved this movie. Bursting with acting talent (Natalie Portman at 15 was already on her way) Beautiful Girls dealt with the various complications between a group of buddies since their high school days and their respective girlfriends. Not much of a storyline, but it is done so well, so realistically, and the participants are for the most part so likeable, that it''s hard not to love this film. Worth seeing more than once.

The whole storyline is something that actually is common to a lot of people that age - trying to find yourself and decide what to do with your life. It is a completely believable movie and is my all time favorite! I have watched this so many times I know the lines before they are said but I can still watch it over and over. I absolutely love Timothy Hutton in this role. Matt Dillon also gives a great performance. Needless to say it is now one of my niece''s top five favorite movies and she says its the best gift she got this year!!!

From the first guy we meet, Timothy Hutton, to the last gal we are introduced to, Annabeth Gish, the viewer here is treated to a veritable smorgasbord of, not only beautiful, but extremely talented acting greats. That coupled with a grand, great, groovy soundtrack you got a superb, sublime slice of comedy / drama greatness. For what it lacks in orange explosions and red claret sprayed on the screen, it more than makes up for with a staggering array of stars - more so than any galaxy in the universe. A joy to watch and behold. It’s an adult movie for an adult audience (the smattering of F word sees to that). As relevant today as it was back then. The film is genuinely good. Four stars for the cast. And for the subtitles. (The dvd didn’t have SDH subtitles) and did I mention, the cast? One of thee very best casts ever. One note of interest: the cover image of Lauren Holly is incorrect. In the film itself she has red hair. On the cover she looks to be a blonde. Noah Emmerich is a great actor and not name checked on the front cover (lack of space maybe?), same goes for Natalie Portman. However Michael Rappaport IS featured. Don’t get me wrong I do like him but I guess he was more recognisable. Or something. One more thing the beautiful and brilliant Mira Sorvino is credited on the front but not pictured. Oh, and there’s a trailer.

Ted Demme''s film is extremely warm, despite its snowbound landscape- more suited to Egoyan''s ''The Sweet Herafter''. This film did squat at the box office, despite the fact that it has a wonderful script by Scott Rosenberg (Things to do in Denver when you''re Dead, High Fidelity, Er, Con Air...)and a wonderful ensemble cast. Tim Hutton puts in the best performance of his career, Natalie Portman is beguiling in a reverse-Lolita role and Uma Thurman is simply angelic. Think ''Swingers'' with a dash of Capra or ''My so-called Life''. Other plus points include The Afghan Whigs as the local bar band, an extremely amusing Neil Diamond singalong and a wonderfully slobbish Michael Rappaport- with his disturbing philosphy on women ("they''re all sisters Wil. Leave it alone!"). If you liked ''Grosse Point Blank'' or ''Swingers'' this is as good. ''Beautiful Girls'' may have been overlooked because its just too human- maybe a little old fashioned and it hasn''t got cool pastiches of Scorsese or Tarantino- which may mean critical reassessment in the future when we''re bored of all those ''I''m worried I might be homosexual, so here''s some stylised-violence''films (think Guy Ritchie or parts of ''Grosse Point Blank''). The perfect film for the upcoming winter and an example of Hollywood at its most thoughtful. Really!

Despite its rather suggestive title, this film is as sweet and innocent as the lovely Natalie Portman making snow angels. There is, of course, a more substantial level to the film - leitmotivs of friendship, love and return to innocence feature strongly - which leave you with something more than feeling good about the world. Although the principles of good ol'' hometown America are prevalent the feel of this film is anything but conventional, introducing us to the sometimes bizarre world of mid-west America. It''s not uncomfortable, just different. A truly lovely film that will help you appreciate your friends and their often brutal honesty....
